Process principle and advantages of MBBR

Apr 18, 2022

The principle of MBBR process is to use the basic principle of biofilm method. By adding a certain amount of suspended carrier to the reactor, the biomass and biological species in the reactor are increased, thereby improving the processing efficiency of the reactor. Since the density of the filler is close to that of water, it is in a state of complete mixing with water during aeration, and the environment for microbial growth is gas, liquid, and solid three-phase. The collision and shearing of the carrier in the water make the air bubbles smaller and increase the utilization rate of oxygen. In addition, each carrier has different biological species inside and outside, some anaerobic bacteria or facultative bacteria grow inside, and aerobic bacteria outside, so that each carrier is a microreactor, so that nitrification reaction and denitrification reaction exist at the same time , thereby improving the processing effect.

The principle of MBBR process
The principle of MBBR process is to increase the biomass and biological species in the reactor by adding a certain amount of suspended carrier to the reactor, thereby improving the processing efficiency of the reactor. In addition, each carrier has different biological species inside and outside, some anaerobic bacteria or facultative bacteria grow inside, and the outside is eutrophic bacteria, so that each carrier is a microreactor, so that nitrification reaction and denitrification reaction coexist , thereby improving the processing effect.

The MBBR process combines the advantages of traditional fluidized bed and biological contact oxidation. It is a new and efficient sewage treatment method. Relying on the aeration in the aeration tank and the lifting effect of the water flow, the carrier is in a fluidized state, thereby forming a suspension. The growing activated sludge and the attached growing biofilm make the moving bed biofilm use the entire reactor space, give full play to the advantages of both the attached phase and the suspended phase organisms, and make them complement each other. Different from the previous fillers, the suspended fillers can come into contact with sewage frequently and repeatedly, so they are called "mobile biofilms".

Advantages of MBBR
Compared with activated sludge method and fixed filler biofilm method, MBBR not only has the high efficiency and operation flexibility of activated sludge method, but also has the characteristics of shock load resistance, long sludge age and less excess sludge of traditional biofilm method.

(1) Packing characteristics
The fillers are mostly made of polyethylene, polypropylene and their modified materials, polyurethane foam, etc., the specific gravity is close to water, mainly cylindrical and spherical, easy to hang the film, no agglomeration, no clogging, easy to release the film.

(2) Good denitrification ability
A nutrient-rich, anoxic and anaerobic environment is formed on the filler, and nitrification and denitrification reactions can occur in one reactor, which has a good effect on the removal of ammonia nitrogen.

(3) The effect of removing organic matter is good
The sludge concentration in the reactor is relatively high. Generally, the sludge concentration is 5 to 10 times that of the ordinary activated sludge method, and can be as high as 30 to 40 g/L. The treatment efficiency of organic matter is improved, and the shock load resistance is strong.

(4) Easy to maintain and manage
There is no need to set filler brackets in the aeration tank, the maintenance of the filler and the aeration device at the bottom of the tank is convenient, and the investment and floor space can be saved.
